At EHCC we offer several opportunities
to stretch the mind and spirit with a smaller group of people.
- The Occupy Movement: What Can It Mean to You? Join us for a Community Conversation on Saturday, February 4 from 6-9 p.m. at Eagle Harbor Congregational
Church. Dinner at 6 p.m. Conversation and panel discussion to
follow the meal. Learn more about, and discuss, Roots of the Movement;
Experiences on the Ground at Occupy Sites; and Insights and Opportunities. To register, email Norn at nkeegal@gmail.com or call Judy Brown at
206-842-3722.
- Soup-n-Such, Wednesday, February 15 at noon in the fellowship hall. After lunch, if the weather is in our favor, we’ll hear from Kate deVeaux and Sue Lukins who will tell us all about their pilgrimage on the Road of St. James in France. Everyone’s invited! RSVP to Jennifer in the office. Suggested lunch donation: $3.
- Hungry Readers meets Monday, February 20, 7pm in the Singer room to discuss What Would Jesus Deconstruct: The Good News of Post-Modernism for the Church by John D. Caputo. One online summary reads: “This provocative addition to The Church and Postmodern Culture series offers a lively rereading of Charles Sheldon's In His Steps as a constructive way forward. John D. Caputo introduces the notion of why the church needs deconstruction, positively defines deconstruction's role in renewal, deconstructs idols of the church, and imagines the future of the church in addressing the practical implications of this for the church's life through liturgy, worship, preaching, and teaching. Students of philosophy, theology, religion, and ministry, as well as others interested in engaging postmodernism and the emerging church phenomenon, will welcome this provocative, non-technical work.” You may remember hearing some quotations from the book in sermons after Dee heard the author lecture in the fall. Come and join us for a full review of Caputo’s ideas.
- Lent Study Group: Wednesdays February 29-April 4, 6:30-7:30pm in the Singer room. We’ll be reading and discussing Way Words by UCC pastor John Indermark. As Indermark notes, Way Words are concise phrases or sentences in the Bible that illuminate what it means to journey by faith. Each of the 47 daily readings is organized around a particular “Way Word” from Scripture and includes a Scripture excerpt and a brief prayer or spiritual exercise. It is geared for small group study. You can order a copy of the book directly from Cokesbury, or talk to Jennifer (in the church office) by February 8 to be part of a larger group order. Cost of book: $7.
-
Bible Study: Tuesday mornings, 9:30-11am, in Dee's office, beginning September 6. We gather for tea and gentle conversation about the lectionary readings guided by the “Seasons of the Spirit” adult study curriculum. Click on Worship with Us to see weekly lectionary/scripture readings.
- Choir: We’re a multi-age group with a variety of
singing experience. We’re open to any and all who’d like to explore
and expand their vocal interests and talents. During the school year we practice Thursday
evenings, from 7:00-8:15pm and Sunday mornings at 8:30am before
worship. Some of us also participate in smaller group ensembles who
perform periodically before the congregation. If you're interested in singing with us, contact Alice Tawresey or Carol Estes.
- Men’s Breakfast: We meet from 7-8:20am every
Thursday (except major holidays) in our fellowship hall. We
partake of a simple meal of oatmeal and fruit, and enjoy conversation
and, often, a program by one of our attendees or a guest we’ve invited.
The group is secular in nature, comprised of many philosophies, faiths,
and beliefs, and there is amazing expertise available, regardless of
the subject.
